Japanese binding

Japanese binding (Yotsumetoji)

Material:

  • Textblock: Japanese paper, zenyu, 40gsm
  • Sewing: twisted Japanese paper (Sekishu) and cotton thread
  • Cover: Katazome-shi (stencil dyed paper) lined with machine made Japanese paper, RK17
  • Corner: silk textile
  • Adhesive: wheat starch paste

Selecting fine materials is the most important aspect to make fine bindings. The Japanese binding structure is much simpler than a
western one. Japanese paper is produced by hand and lasts for a long time; it is thus often used for conservation work in the west.
You can hopefully feel the warmth of hand-made paper and enjoy making calligraphy and drawings with it.
